| CENTRE EDUCATION PROGRAMME: Process of Enrolment |
The first step in joining Centre Ed is
to attend an interview. The young person usually attends the meeting
with a parent or carer and meets with a staff member where they are
given the chance to share with the Centre some of their past
experiences, both in and out of school, whilst seeing first hand how
the Centre operates. Generally speaking new students to the Centre can
enrol from the age of 13, but in extenuating circumstances young people
below this age can be accepted.
Student 1 (interviewer): What would you be doing if you weren’t at the Centre?
Student 2 (interviewee): I dunno (sic), probably sitting at home, on the couch, maybe watching TV. |
There are very few limitations that impede the enrolment of a young
person. The main obstacle is space; the physical capacity of the Centre
often can’t meet the demand, and many new enrolments spend some time
looming on the Centre’s waiting list. The other hurdle is the will of
the young person. “It’s up to you?” - a young person must want to learn
to join the Centre. Once enrolled attendance is not compulsory, but it
is no secret to the young people that the need to ‘own’ their place.
Ownership is initially determined by attending the programme for 10
consecutive days during their first two weeks of enrolment, and therein
daily participation is expected, and any exception must be backed with
legitimate reason.
The flow chart below outlines the process of enrolment at the Centre Education Programme.
