| Key College :: The Lessons of Key College |
|
What does Key College teach us? It reinforces the value of a small and personalised environment in which a holistic and integrated approach can be taken to young people's needs. However, it also emphasises the importance of a focus on meeting the academic needs of students - and of supporting students to having and achieving concrete goals.
The small size also means that the school has the ability to respond constructively to individual incidents and blow-ups without letting these either dominate or distract.
Above all, Key College has demanded and harnessed the commitment from young people to be there. It starts with an expression of commitment to general goals and works to clarify and develop these - and to establish the steps that students need to take to achieve these.
While it may not be possible to replicate Key College's staff:student ratios in all schools, there are important lessons from Key College that are applicable everywhere:
the need for student determination and articulation of their personal goals;
coherence between student and staff intentions;
the development of programs that are clearly and transparently designed to achieve those goals;
inclusion of real-life work experiences that test and clarify intentions; and
high expectations in even difficult circumstances;
an experienced, dedicated and compassionate staff.
