The island : History
The Island started some 30 years ago as a drop-in centre for young people where they were taught practical skills (The Island, 2005). Originally located in a disused building in a traffic island near the entrance to the Eastern Freeway in Melbourne it took its name both from its original location in Queensbury Road and its metaphoric significance as a haven or refuge. Over the years it has shifted location a number of times and evolved into a fulltime work education and training centre. It is now a campus of Collingwood College (P-12) and located on its existing site for 10 years (but may have to be again relocated due to renovations and end of lease issues). It has often been in precarious financial situations but is now more secure as a Registered Training Organisation (RTO) and funded both by the Education Department and various industrial partner sponsorships and grants. The Island is supported by organisations like Victoria Police, and industrial partners Incolink, GM Holden, Flashprint & Consium, who all see a high level of potential in The Island’s students.
